I’m back from my annual fishing trip in Canada. As usual, a group of us guys headed up to Whiskey Jack Lodge in NW Ontario. I first went about 5 years ago now, but my brother and his friends have been going for a bit over 10 now. This year, since a lot of the normal crew was not able to make it, it was just me, Ryan, and then my Dad and uncle Tim.

Our fish of choice up there is walleye. This year it was fairly warm, one day was even 95 degrees. Huge contrast from the past couple years where it’s been icy on the lake the first day or two, and about 40-50 degrees every day. The weather had been so warm that fishing was like it normally was late in June. For us, this meant that the spawn was over, the big fish had moved out deeper in the lake, and the smaller ones were fighting much harder than they had in the past couple years.

The rain stayed away mostly, it was pretty nice most days but we did have two days of stormy weather for a bit of the day each day. One day was 95 degrees, then huge thunderstorms, so the fishing was pretty horrible that day. Only Tim and I caught fish that day, Ryan and Dad were skunked.
At night, there was a full moon, so it was fun to get out with Ryan and shoot a couple night shots. Here’s the results:

Probably my favorite part of the trip is shore lunch, although there was a fire ban this year so we didn’t do fires. We typically have fish wrapped in aluminum foil with spices, onion, and butter. It’s pretty delicious, easy, quick, and has very minimal cleanup required. One of the great things is you can pretty much pull off to the side anywhere and cook wherever you want.

You can also drink beer.

One day, we went onto a portage trail to Princess Lake to check out the beaver dam and see what it looked like. The trail was in pretty good shape, except at the end the water was probably almost a foot higher than we’d seen it last when we went there 2 years ago. The boats we use to get to the lake were almost underwater:

The dam was even bigger than before, really impressive to see it year by year get bigger and bigger:

Saw a ladyslipper on the side of the trail to princess:

Ryan celebrated:

Dad was amused:

Overall great trip, for more pics, check out my Canada 2010 Set on flickr.
Oh, by the way, Ryan caught a 30.5 incher.
